about

You know master kohta.

Maybe you've been to Kyoto on holiday and know him as the infinitely knowledgeable and affable owner of café la siesta -8bit edition!!!-, the vintage video game-themed cafe and bar.

Maybe you actually live in Kyoto and know him as one of the best local DJs once Siesta goes afterhours, heading up a venue where producers like Toriena and Stones Taro honed their craft before becoming big names on the Japanese (and beyond) dance music circuit.

Maybe you know him from his live Gameboy performances at Square Sounds Tokyo or collaborations with chiphop star Mega Ran.

Anyways my point is you most likely know him from somewhere, and if you don't know you'd better recognise.

Swapping his road-rugged Gameboy for Super Famicom samples for this release, kohta presents four breakbeat- and acid-augmented groovers. It's all there in the title - "Sense" may be derived from the letters SNES but it's also an English language loanword frequently used in Japanese to refer to good taste.

Opener "Brain game" warps the soundtrack from a game designed to help you open your third eye and develop clairvoyancy (tail end bubble era Japan, get in) into something akin to an Orb or Michael Mayer ambient house track, with heartbreakingly beautiful "Silk road" taking that same template to a darker, breakier place. "Fake move" is serpentine in structure, the jazzy bassline twisting and turning with a big compressed breaks and synth arp payoff whilst "Candy beats" ends the originals with a nod to kohta's chip-hop origins.

On the remix front Caracas via Barcelona producer Phran delivers a typically deep, dirty and delightful percussion-heavy take on "Fake move" with the synth arps blasted off to the outer reaches of space on psychedelic tryptamine rockets. NC4K head Lomax takes a similar approach as well, speeding up "Candy beats" and adding rattling percussion, turning it into something what could pass for an undiscovered gem from the Haçienda's heyday. Lastly finestylewest's own Archipelago Soundsystem delivers a dark and rough - and yet melodic - extrapolation of "Silk road" in his new speed goth style, the end result sounding equally at home in a 2023 dub techno mix, a Friday night Spook Factory session in Valencia in 1995 or a 2006 all-nighter at Niche in Sheffield.
